Educational and scientific work of the department of Biotechnology

8.05140103 "Pharmaceutical Biotechnology"
To ensure flight safety and airport service personnel safety in flights carrying out, the biologically active substances of plant, animal and microbial origin were used, productions of which the students study in detail in a number of disciplines including pharmaceutical biotechnology.
In mastering of this discipline educational material the students have the opportunity to examine thoroughly the technological processes of food additives, antibiotics, pharmaceutical enzymes, sorbents, analgesics and other drugs obtaining that used for pilots disease prevention.
In carrying out of flights in those countries where hotbeds of dangerous diseases are fixed (malaria, cholera, dysentery, etc.) for their prevention vaccines and other medicinal products are used. Their production is studied in a number of disciplines and in course and degree projects performance. Of particular importance is the study of pro- and prebiotics that have immunomodulating properties needed for long flights.
Research and study of applied aspects of microbial application in aviation and space industries are essential to the study in special courses.
Great attention to the quality of potable water and fermented drinks for aviation personnel is paid.

Development of modern biotechnology and equipment for renewable energy, including biofuels and aviation inspection of their impact on aircraft and space engines of different aircrafts (drones, small aircrafts, aircrafts and spacecrafts).
Evaluation of fuel degradation, including new types of biofuels, by various biological systems.
Modern technologies of lubricants purification and utilization using biotechnological processes and biological products in aviation industry.
Ecologically safe biotechnology usage in closed systems for spacecrafts and space ports life support systems.
Biotechnological models of astronauts’ life support on future space port and other life-support systems.
Analysis of negative impacts of aviation and space technique on the health of pilots and astronauts allows the creation of biological products for the treatment and nutrition of astronauts and pilots.

Fields of research department of Safety of Human Activities

  1. Monitoring of aircraft engine emissions and air pollution airports.
  2.  Acoustic Ecology. Reducing noise levels in the area of airports.
  3.  Monitoring and normalization of physical factors of production and the environment. The development of measures and means to normalize the electromagnetic situation aeroionic the air, noise, microclimatic parameters of industrial and domestic premises.
  4. Vibroacoustic diagnostics crack formation in structural elements of vehicles. Continuous monitoring of the physical condition bearing metal constructions of industrial and residential buildings.
  5. The development of composite materials for the manufacture of electromagnetic and acoustic screens.
  6.  Reduced production risks.

History of the Department of Safety of Human Activities

The Department was held in the Kyiv Institute of Civil Air Fleet in 1964 by order of head of the Main Administration of Civil Aviation USSR and was named as the Department of Safety Engineering and Fire-prevention Equipment. There weren’t any specialists with academic degrees and titles at the Department, resource base was limited with the only laboratory and the year teaching load in 1964/65 academic years didn’t exceed 4,5000 hours. Five lecturers were employed at the Department;three of them were the staff members: the head of the Department L.A.Burichenko, assistants I.V.Panov and E.N.Bondarenko.
At that time the vigorous activity concerning the development of training, scientific and resource base have been started. The laboratory of the Department was equipped with the unique devises for acoustic measurements ("Bruel&Kjaer", Denmark), the acoustic chamber for the studying from noise of different sources was created, the methodical and resource base for new laboratory work were invented for training students. The great services in reinforcement of the resource base belongs to the engineer L.I.Koroliov.
In 1967 the first fundamental tutorial ‘Labour Precaution in Civil Aviation’ (authors L.A.Burichenko, D.I.Tiurin, E.N.Bondarenko, V.Yu.Dokin), which went a great way in students’ training, advanced training of labour precaution workers and manpower training for technical inspection of Ministry of Civil Aviation.
The quantity of the Department’s staff included seven – ten persons at 70-ies.
Complex of the methodologies of training of ‘Labour precaution’ and training-methodic literatures, which provides the basic courses of the department with the documentation, was developed completely. For a long time the department was a single at civil aviation educational institutions and one of the few at institutes of the USSR’s higher educations.
For many years the department havebeen carrying out researches of the main theme: ‘Development of the methods and means of labour precaution of cavil aviation workers’. The first scientific proceedings ‘Labour precaution in civil aviation’ was published by the department in 1972. Since that time, during 20 years the department have been publishing the scientific proceedings devoted to the problems of labour safety of civil aviation specialists.
At the end of 60ies the young scientists join the department, the PhD dissertation defenses had been occurred by few actual problems of labour precaution: industrial noise and vibration (L.A.Burichenko and L.A.Zarurska); control of air quality of working area (O.S.Protoiereiskiy ); information systems of labour precaution (O.G.Revuk);  static electricity protection (R.M.Pivtorak) etc.
L.I.Korolev, O.S.Protoiereiskiy, I.V.Panov, A.M.Moliboga, V.V.Kazimirchack, I.M.Borovick, and later - talented head of the laboratory V.V.Yatchenko took active involvement in the process of development of laboratory base. During these years the department became the basic training-methodological center of the training and professional development of the labour precaution personnel. The scientific activity of the department was extended; few monographs and training-methodological manuals were published.  In 1978 the manual written by L.A.Burichenko ‘Labour precaution in civil aviation’ (in Russian) was published (republished in 1985, 1993 and in 2003 the manual was supplemented and republished in cooperation with associate professor V.D.Gulevets in Ukrainian). The manual is the basic for all majors in institutes of higher education and colleges of civil aviation in Ukraine.
The scientific officers of the department became the first associate professors: L.A.Zarurska, O.S.Protoiereiskiyand A.M.Moliboga, and the first professor - L.A.Burichenko.
In the 80-90-ies the further development and growth of the amount of training and scientific work had took place at the department, the quantity of the lecturers came up to 19 persons, and in whole over 30 persons had been working at the department.
During few next years the group of well-qualified lawyers was been appended to the department; they taught the disciplines ‘Air Law’, ‘Labour Legislation’ etc. In 1981 due to the adoption of the new course ‘Environmental protection’ the new ecological group had been created at the Department (professor I.M.Naumenko, associate professor L.P.Malakhov, R.M.Pivtorak and others).
The staff of the Department takes active part in social life. For example, in 1981 the staff took place at the yachtregatta and won the Black Sea Cup, performed Elbrus climbing and went in for downhill skiing.
Over 30 years the widely-distributed system of connections of the Department and industry performs effectively. One of the results of similar cooperation became the creation of few training films, which are topical now. The Department was the initiator of innovation development at civil aviation enterprises and the head scientific and methodical organization within the management system of labour protection in civil aviation. The system of the branch standards of labour safety was created by the staff of the Department; the ecological passports of many aviation enterprises was developed and implemented. The Department has created scientific and research efforts at the airports and on the aircraft board to an applications of enterprises.
The Department used to have powerful engineering staff and laboratory assistants – responsible helpers of teaching staff in the educational process and preparation of methodological support (M.S.Nazarenko, N.A.Radzievka, S.V.Filchenkova, F.I.Marhel, I.A.Tolkachov).
During its existence the Department has trained over than 30.000 graduators of the University in the area of labour safety, about 5,000 domestic and foreignspecialists in labour precaution and protection in the field of civil aviation.
In 2000 the Department had joined with the Department of Civil Defence chaired by V.I.Prymenko and teaching staff have increased up to 24 experts, lots of them were honored with academic ranks and degrees (4 professors and 9 associate professors). Annual hours of the Department had increased over 20,000 hours.
Scientists and educators of talent (professor G.M.Franchuk, associate professors A.O.Ivanov, V.V.Matiborsky, V.A.Ivanenko, G.A.Kovalenko, and later – professor O.I. Zaporozhets, associate professors S.M.Fedoryk, I.V.Kononko, V.M.Isaenko, assistant O.Yu. Drach)had been engaged by the Department in connection with significant increasing of the volume of works in 80-90-ies.
In the middle of 90-ies the Department had started training of engineers in new major “Safety of Human Activities”, later one more new speciality had been opened up –“Ecology and environmental protection”. The freshman admission had reached 130 persons in 2000. The Departmentwas renamed into the Department of labor and environmental protection. New specialities had become popular among applicants of the University.
High research and educational potential of the Department, confirmed by diplomas of competitions, exhibitions and conferences, allow Department’s staff to continue activities in training of high-skilled personnel, to develop the technological processes in the area of air transport and other branches of industry.
In 2001 two new departments have been developed on the basis of the Department of labour and environmental protection: Department of Ecology and Department of Safety of Human Activities. The educational process by the educational program of speciality “Ecology and environmental protection” and the normative discipline “Fundamentals of Ecology” was passed to the Department of Ecology.
Educational load of the Department consists of training of normative disciplines “Safety of Human Activities”, “Fundamentals of Labour Precaution”, “Labour Precaution in Branch”, and “Civil Defence” and consultations in development of separate chapter “Labour Precaution” which is included in diploma design.
Department staff takes active part in a work of Scientific and methodological commission of labour protection (professors O.I.Zaporozhets, V.I.Tokarev, V.A.Glyva), civil defence (professors V.I.Prymenko and O.I.Zaporozhets) and safety of human activities (associate professors B.D. Khalmuradov and A.V.Rysalovsky) of the Scientific and Methodological Council of the Ministry ofEducation of Ukraine.
After creation of the Joint Scientific and Methodological Committee (S&MC) of Civil Defence in 2007, professor O.I.Zaporozhets has become the Head of the Committee, and associate professor B.D.Khalmyradov has took a position of the Secretary the Committee, professor V.I. Prymenko is a panel member of the S&MC. In 2011 associate professors of the Department (A.V.Rysalovsky and V.M.Zaplatynsky) became panel members of the S&MC.
The Department is a founder of National Scientific and Practical Conference “Safety of human life - education, science and practice (SoHL)”. In 2011 10th anniversary conference “SoHL-2011” was held. One of the great services of the conferences SoHL is scientific and methodological substantiation of default educational programs of the disciplines “Safety of Human Activities”, “Fundamentals of Labour Precaution”, “Labour Precaution in Branch”, and “Civil Defence”, which was approved in 2010 by Education Ministry of Ukraine, Ministry of Emergencies and State Service of Mining Supervision and Industrial Safety of Ukraine.
Nowadays “SoHL” is international conference, in which participate scientists from Russian Reservation, post-CIS countries, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, USA and other countries. The Department is a member of European Corporate Security Association.
A lot of scientific officers of the Department are the members of International Academy of Safety of Human Activities.

Learning English

In 2006 immersion program was started. The department began to admit students for studying in English in major “Ecology and Environmental Protection”. The work which has been done since then is aimed on development of fundamental basis for running high-quality professional training process. Now the major is called “Ecology, Environmental protection and Natural Resource Management”. The main objective is to make the training process comply with world standards of environmentalists preparing. Over this period of time the staff of the department that could teach in English was significantly increased in number. Textbooks, manuals, tutorials, learner's guide were written and published in English. The work is being continued now because the science does not stand still.
From the very first days of the immersion program and up to the present interest in studying in English has not been going down. Every year the department admits a new group for the immersion program. Students confess that studying in English has its own unquestionable advantages:
Studying in English is a step towards students to meet their needs because not only are they interested in getting undergraduate and graduate degree, but they also interested in broadening their outlooks, their professional mobility, and sources of getting knowledge. Extensive spreading of the internet helps to get information from different sources all over the world. Because of this in the future a specialist who has also a good command of English can always find his place at labour-market.

History of Ecology Department

Department of ecology was organized on April 26th in the year of 2006 by the Rector of the University (order № 53/од of 26.04.2001) on the basis of the department of labor precaution and environmental protection.The first head of the department was Professor Volodymyr M. Isaenko. His years in the office were from 2001 to 2008. On his initiative first curriculums and syllabuses were developed, educational process was organized, correspondence training and immersion program (training in English) were established. In the year of 2003 the first in Ukraine the Faculty of Environmental Protection was opened. This faculty was reorganized later into the Faculty of Ecological Safety, and then, in the year of 2010, on the basis of it the Institute of Environmental Safety was created.



Professor Grigorii M. Franchuk was head of the department from 2008 to 2011. On his initiative All-Ukrainian theoretical and practical conference of young scientists and students “Ecological safety of the state” was founded in the year of 2007. Franchuk was a joint author of Branch standard of higher education for undergraduate training (bachelor degree). Under his supervision graduate and postgraduate training processes were conducted. With his help fundamental and applied research had broadened.


On the third of June of 2011 professor Segii V. Boichenko became the heard of the department. He is still at the head now. Traditions, initiated many years ago by his predecessors, continue developing. First of all serious consideration is being given to improvement of training process, rising in levels of attainment, especially of postgraduate students. New academic curriculums have been developed for training graduate students (master degree) of specialty 7(8).04010601 “Ecology and Environmental Protection”. Serious consideration is being given also to research activity of the department and to development of material and technical basis. New research policy has been introduced – chemmotology.
From the very beginning of the department new subsidiaries have been created on the basis of institutes of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU) and aviation enterprises. The institutes and enterprises are: Hydrobiology Institute of NASU, National University of Bioresources and Nature Management of Ukraine, Geochemistry and Environment Institute of NASU and Emergency Management Ministry of Ukraine, Scientific Center of Radiation Medicine of Academy of Medical Science of Ukraine, Microbiology and Virology Institute of NASU named after D. Zabolotny, Hygiene and Medical Ecology Institute of Academy of Medical Science of Ukraine named after O. Marzeev, Telecommunication and Global Informational Space Institute, State International Airport “Borispol”, Civil Aviation Plant # 410, Ukrainian Institute of Environment and Sources Research NASU.

It is obvious that specialists in ecology and environmental protection are in demand not only in Ukraine but all over the world.
Ecology department runs training process in the area of knowledge “Natural Sciences”. It trains undergraduate students (bachelor degree) in major “Ecology, Environmental protection and Natural Resource Management” and graduate students (master degree) of specialty “Ecology and Environmental Protection”. In addition the department helps to train all other students of the university in ecological sciences.
The department has a lot of experience in international collaboration. Some of its alumnae and professors have had periods of trainee abroad and have ability to take part in the “immersion program”. In this program all academic process is conducted in English. In 2014 the department is starting to train students in new major “Chemical Technologies of Alternative Energy Sources”.
Highly qualified faculty, which consists of 6 professors and 26 associated professors,   provides continuous and consistent academic process, including on-the-job training.   It allows its alumnae to occupy leading positions in different companies and in governmental offices.
The academic process is run in accordance with modern educational techniques, based on ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).  It includes modular structure of the academic process, motivation of the students by setting clear goals, considerable amount of student’s self-study aimed on quick adaptation to Bolognese process.
Scientific potential of the department is constantly putting into action by the faculty on the basis of its own research results and over-year collaboration with our affiliated branches at different research institutions, universities and enterprises.

Scientific-research work at Chemistry and Chemical Technology Department

 Scientific research activity of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Technology begins with its foundation in 1933. Since then, its main focus was to investigate the operational characteristics of aviation fuels. In connection with the provision of our institution status of "National University" the Field of research interests of specialists of the department has grown significantly, which is also associated with opening new majors in the field of chemical technology of fuel and carbon materials (2002) and macromolecular compounds (2003). It should be noted developments in the field of anodic oxidation of organic compounds (prof. V.M. Ledovskykh), creation of functional oxide materials for chemical power engineering and elektrokatalizu (guiding by prof. S.V. Ivanov) and others.
Department staff actively participates in scientific work, including 5 professors and 15 associate professors. Now 5 graduate students engaged in graduate school of full-time and extramular learning. 2 doctors and 2 PhDs were produced at the department.
Associate Professor Sokolsky G.V. in October 2013 defended his doctoral thesis "Physical and chemical aspects of the formation and properties of functional nanostructured oxide materials based on manganese (IV)», for the degree of doctor of sciences, specialty 02.00.04 - physical chemistry, scientific adviser - prof., doctor of chemical sciences Ivanov S.V.
Predefence of thesis proceeded at the enlarged meeting of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of Institute of Ecological Safety of National Aviation University. Also work has received a positive decision on the specialized departments at the interdepartmental scientific seminar of the Departments of Physical and Inorganic Chemistry of chemical faculty of Kiev National University by T.G. Shevchenko. The defence of the work occurred at the specialized scientific council of this university.
The authors of the scientific research work № 726DB11 "Plasma chemical modification and electrochemical design of oxide materials" are proposed the  technology of creation of cathode materials of lithium and alkaline systems based on manganese dioxide with specific characteristics on the level of the best international standards, which have been confirmed by independent tests on models of chemical current sources (CCS) of these systems. A technology of cathode materials of lithium system batteries based on nonstoichiometric high power chromium compounds was created. The modern tendency to consumption of small currents (20-30 mA) due to the miniaturization of electronic hardware technology make these power supplies the indispensable basis of ultrathin CCS for defibrillators, neural stimulators, smart cards (credit, transport and cards of safety of the last generation), systems of radio frequency identification, wireless sensors, as a means of storing energy accumulated by solar cells and so on.
Today there is active search for foreign partners and stakeholder organizations. These developments are given to the newly created Technology Park NAU, where they entered into a number of priority to the implementation developments. They were offered on the site CORDIS (http://cordis.europa.eu/partners/web/req-3588) to participate in competitions FP7 Framework Programme (GC.NMP.2012-1 Innovative automotive electrochemical storage applications based on nanotechnology).
Sufficiently high efficiency, environmental friendliness and profitability of adsorption cleaning  using natural sorbents - zeolites and clay minerals in the adsorption process of cleaning oil from sulfur compounds is known. Montmorillonite and palygorskite breeds, activated zeolites of mordenite group show relatively high affinity for sulfur compounds. Natural sorbents allow to obtain the desired result, but they have a low sorption capacity, which in turn impairs performance. The modification of natural zeolites by ions (metal atoms) in order to improve their sorption-selective properties is perspective. Methods of ion exchange, impregnation, sedimentation, adsorption metal vapor from gas phase, and so on are used for entering into the pores and coating the surface of the crystal of zeolites by catalytically active components. However, these methods do not always make it possible to obtain adsorbents with predetermined operational characteristics, such as selective sorbent for the purification of fuel sulfur. The offered method allows to modify the surface of of zeolites and to get adsorbents of different purposes. On the basis of these examples new adsorbents modified by method of low-temperature plasma will be created. They will be designed for adsorption cleaning of oil products from sulfur compounds.
Thus, new functional oxide materials, including composite were obtained, which would be used as electrodes in fuel cells, would be applied in adsorption processes of cleaning oil from sulfur compounds. Work on finding potential partners and stakeholders in the modification of adsorbents by plasma chemical processing is provided. The developed method of unique plasma chemical modification provides unique surface properties of materials of different nature, that is why its scope is not limited to the creation of new adsorbents and catalyst, electrode materials and more. The resulting materials are patent and competitive because of the uniqueness of the applied techniques.

Due to the achievments of the department of chemistry and chemical technology in the field of chemical current sources (CCS), which have been the subject of research including this research at the department has worked a section deducated to "green" aspects of the use of CCS of International Conference «International Green Energy Conference (IGEC-8) "in June 2013. For similar reasons, executors of SRW 726 DB11 invited to participate and work actively in a consortium with other members of the NAU on the project "Tempus", in which it is planned to improve curricula and other components of the educational process for the Master's program "Applied Ecology" NAU.
